Pursue Happy Holiness

Writer: Trevor Carr Trevor Carr

What comes to mind when you think of holiness? Perhaps you envision God on His throne, surrounded by worshipping angels. Maybe you think of a pious saint, living selflessly for the good of others, or recall moments in worship when you felt God’s presence powerfully. These images of holiness can feel awe-inspiring but distant—something extraordinary, rather than an everyday reality.

Holiness, however, isn’t just a lofty ideal; it’s what God created us for. The truth is, our pursuit of holiness can sometimes feel daunting, especially when we fall short. Paul expressed this tension when he confessed in Romans 7:19, “For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do.” Yet even in the struggle, God’s commitment to transforming us into the image of Christ remains steadfast.

"But just as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

We were made to be holy. Our minds, emotions, and bodies were designed to thrive when we align ourselves with God’s Word. Choosing holiness isn’t just about avoiding sin—it’s about living the full, abundant life God has for us. And here’s a beautiful truth: holiness and happiness go hand in hand. While the world often separates the two, seeing holiness as restrictive, God shows us that living His way brings joy and peace.

At first, pursuing holiness may feel like duty. It requires intentional effort to turn away from old habits, resist temptation, and walk in obedience. But as we consistently choose God’s way, something remarkable happens: duty becomes delight. We begin to see the benefits and blessings of obedience. Holiness transforms from something we do into who we are, shaping our character and lifestyle.

Where do you feel God calling you to pursue holiness? Maybe it’s in your thoughts, speech, relationships, or habits. Commit those areas to Him. Ask for His help, seek accountability from others, and trust the Holy Spirit to give you strength. As you walk in holiness, you’ll experience the truth of Nehemiah 8:10: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

God’s holiness isn’t cold or distant—it’s life-giving and joyful. He invites you to be conformed to the image of Christ, to experience His goodness daily, and to know the joy that comes from living His way.

Pray with your own words, or try these:

Father, thank You for calling me to holiness and equipping me through Your Spirit. Help me to align my life with Your Word, to choose Your way even when it’s hard, and to delight in the joy that comes from obedience. Transform me to reflect Jesus more and more each day. In His name, amen.
