How we approach God reveals how we view Him and what we believe about His character. If we avoid personal time with God, perhaps we see Him as distant and uninterested. If we focus on our imperfections, we might view Him as judgmental or harsh. And if we pray for others but avoid sharing our own needs, we may believe He is powerful but not personally invested in our lives. These distorted views can hinder our relationship with God.
There are two truths that guide us into a healthy view of who God is and how we can approach Him. The first is that God desires to be a Father who welcomes His children into His presence. Jesus modeled this when He told the disciples not to keep children from coming to Him and then blessing them (Mark 10:14-16). In the same way, God invites us to come to Him without hesitation, knowing we are welcome. He created us to enjoy His presence and to receive His goodness.
"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name.” (Psalm 100:4)
The second is that we are meant to approach God with praise. When we approach God with thankful praise we acknowledge who He is. Starting with repentance can unintentionally place the focus on our failures, but beginning with gratitude shifts our perspective to His holiness, love, and grace. Praise and thankfulness acknowledge God as the defining figure in our relationship—our perfect and loving Father who delights in us.
Just as earthly parents expect their children to depend on them for provision, direction, and care, God created us to rely on Him in every area of our lives. He is not surprised by our needs or overwhelmed by our weaknesses. Instead, He invites us to run to Him, confident that His grace and power are more than sufficient to meet us in every circumstance. Through Jesus, we have full access to His presence, where we find the strength and help we need.
Take time to reflect on His provision, care, and faithfulness in your life. Sometimes, intentionally listing His blessings opens our eyes to how deeply He loves and provides for us daily. Spend a few minutes in prayer, simply thanking God for each one. Let this practice of gratitude shape how you approach Him throughout the day.
Pray with your own words, or try these:
Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your presence as Your child. Help me to approach You with a heart of thankfulness, knowing that You are a good and loving Father. Thank You for providing for me, even in ways I don’t always see. Shift my focus to Your holiness and love, and let my gratitude bring me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
