Walk In Your New Identity

Writer: Trevor Carr Trevor Carr

Walking in your God-given identity is both a spiritual truth and a practical journey. In Christ, you are a new creation. People may remember who you used to be and what you used to do. Familiar places or old habits might tempt you to slip into previous patterns. But here’s the truth: temptation is not sin—it’s an opportunity to reaffirm your identity in Christ.

"So if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

The way you think about yourself matters. Align your thoughts with who God says you are, not with your past or current shortcomings. This requires viewing your life through the lens of God’s promises rather than your failures. Every decision you make becomes a small but meaningful vote for the person you are becoming in Christ. Even the smallest actions, like choosing prayer over distraction or kindness over frustration, build evidence that you are living in the new nature God has given you.

When temptation arises, instead of doubting your progress or identity, see it as an opportunity to trust God’s work in you. You are not defined by your past or by the struggles you face. Your identity is rooted in Christ’s love and victory, not in what you have or haven’t achieved. As you make intentional choices that reflect your identity in Christ, you reinforce the truth that you are God’s child, empowered to live a holy and purposeful life.

Cast a vote with every action for the type of person we desire to be.

Think of it this way: every small step you take toward God is a step away from who you used to be. Visualize the person God is shaping you to become—a person who walks in holiness, reflects Jesus, and trusts God’s promises. Each small act of obedience strengthens this vision and provides tangible evidence of the transformation happening within you.

Take a moment to reflect on your life. What old identities or habits are you tempted to believe still define you? How are you currently approaching the process of change? Are you aligning your actions with the truth of who God says you are? Ask God to help you remember that you are not alone in this journey. He is patient, loving, and committed to finishing the good work He started in you.

Pray with your own words, or try these:

Father, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. Help me to fully embrace the identity You’ve given me and to live it out each day. Strengthen me to make choices that reflect my new nature and remind me of Your love and grace in moments of struggle. When I am tempted, let me see it as an opportunity to trust You and declare my identity in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
